Tokina 11-16mm F2.8?

Anyone have any personal experience with this lens and with how it might compare to the Canon Ef-S 10-22 in terms of image quality?

It seems to have had good reviews but not found many people with the lens to give an opinion.

I am looking for a decent wide angle for my Canon 40D and the ones I am considering are the Canon 10-22, Tokina 12-24, Tokina 11-16 and Canon 17-40 L

The two lenses that I would suggest you concentrate on, would be the Canon 10-22mm and the Sigma 10-20mm.

I've heard good things about the Tokina 12-24mm...but 12mm is basically 20% narrower than 10mm...so the difference in your field of view is very noticeable...and you are going wide, you might as well get as wide as you can.

The Sigma 10-20mm gets pretty good reviews and it's one of the cheaper lenses in this group. The Canon is probably the best lens overall, but it's also more expensive.

I read a lot of reviews and ended up going with the Canon.

but this is f2.8, you just cant beat that... i dont know much about image quality and had no personal experiece, but f2.8 is a good thing to consider if youre diong a lot of low-light shooting like weddings and etc.

I'm a nikon shooter, but in reviews (see Kenrockwells comparisons), the 11-16 outperformed even Nikon's pro grade 12-14 by a considerable ammount, especially sharpness.

I have the 11-16 and it's definitely a great lens. Here's a few recent samples. I'll post some more later if you want.

I love it because I can get away with walkaround night shots at only iso800 which still looks decent on my D80. 1600 or higher really starts to look like crap and a lot of detail, color, and dynamic range is lost. It also makes the longer night exposures only 15-20s rather than 30-40s.

If you're worried about getting the widest possible lens, I personally don't consider a 1mm difference between 10 or 11mm, or 11 or 12mm to be a huge difference. 10 vs 12 is definitely significant though. If I really want to go SUPER wide, I have the 10.5 fisheye for Nikon which makes any ultra-wide rectilinear lens look narrow!

I'll probably be switching to this lens soon, selling my sigma 10-20mm... I want a little more sharpness in the corners and f2.8 is useful, but having f4 being really sharp is very useful, I just want to find somewhere that has this in stock

^ Calling around to local shops in your area and seeing if they have any would probably be your best bet. All the big places like B&H and Adorama and Ritz are probably heavily back-ordered.

Go with the 10-22mm Canon, I bought one Tokina lens and it was the last I'll ever buy again.

just got mine this weekend, it is noticably more sharp than my sigma 10-20mm was, especially in the corners... the only downside is that its a little more sensitive to lens flare
