I just upgraded my camera and switched to Nikon -I had a 50mm 1.8 with my Rebel - it was SHARP! I bought the same lens for my Nikon and the pics seem soft. I thought it was me since I'm new but I went out today and shot in Aperture priority instead of manual figuring I was screwing something up - pics are still soft. I put my focus point on my daughters' eyes and to me they don't look totally in focus. Do I need to upgrade to the 1.4? Maybe I just have a bad copy?

It could be a matter of getting used to the new camera. What aperture were you shooting at?

I believe I was at 3.6

you can't judge sharpness from a small picture.
post a full-size image or at least 100% crops
include exif

I assume you are probably shooting JPEG? Did you sharpen these in post at all??

What are the cameras sharpening settings set to? Nikon normally sets them pretty low from the factory.

I shoot raw and adjust in elements most of the time. I spent the weekend playing with settings, I think I got everything set correctly. Here are a couple pics from Easter Sunday, the focus is much improved from where it was earlier last week.

Every nikon 50mm is perfectly sharp at f3.6. It's not the lens. If u have the new "g" version of the 50 1.8, it should outperform the lens u had for your canon.
