I just got a wireless trigger for my 40d & 430ex.
I've never used OCF and am looking for some sort of a 'kit'.
I think these two are what I'm looking for and am not sure if I should get the umbrella(cheaper) of the soft box(more expensive). both are in my budget, just not knowing what I'm doing, not sure which would be most universal.

2331 Westcott 28 inch Apollo Flash Kit #2331 with 8' Light Stand

2332 Westcott 43 inch Collapsible Umbrella Flash Kit #2332 with 8' Light Stand

Any opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I was asking the same question a couple months back. I went with the umbrella. Not that I think its a better option, but it is cheaper and I was up for the challenge of learning to deal with less light control.

Softboxes can offer you the most (and best) control and most uniform lighting but are also the most expensive option. Umbrellas are the cheapest and most difficult to control and produce the most spill.

If you don't plan on transporting the softbox to other locations i highly recommend looking into making your own. Its cheap and just as effective.

thanks for the replies. i just ordered the soft box kit and a 40" reflector.

i have a 'photo shoot' planned in a couple weeks. for a yoga studio.
wish me luck!

I have 4 of the Impact 60" umbrellas.

24" is a pretty small softbox for doing portraiture, beyond head shots.

I would recommend you look at brolly boxes, like the Photek Softlighters: photek softlighter ii
