unexpected use of the Canon 75-300 4.5-5.6

I found myself using this lens the other day as a portrait lens with really good results. The sharpness was very good @f9-f11 but only in direct sunlight.
Anyone else have similar results ?

Good way to start off a shoot before switching to the 28-75 as it gets darker.
