I am thinking of getting a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D for my d50. I am planning on buying better lenses for now but eventually I will ditch my d50 for something better. Right now I have a 18-50mm and a 70-300mm lens by quantaray. I am thinking of getting rid of the 70-300 because I have not been using it much lately other than for macro photography. Will the 50mm work for this purpose too? I know is is a great portrait lens but what about macro stuff?

yeah, the 60 2.8 is a good lens.

The 60 2.8 can be used as a normal and macro with very good results. You will sacrifice 1 1/3 stops in speed. As a stop-gap method, the 50 1.8 and a set of filter type close-up lenses will do a decent job. Total cost should be around $120.00. But, if you can afford to loose the speed and not to mention the extra cash, the 60 is a great performer.

the problem is you really don't want to use a macro lens for portraiture. Unless of course you want to bring out every little blemish on your subjects face.

Macro lenses make amazing portrait lenses!
