Just a picture I took messing around...what do you think?

I really liked this photo, but I just seems to be lacking - something. I don't know.

Any tips on making it better? Anything you liked?

the lighting on this picture is just right, maybe the only thing could be changed that i can think of is the color of the guys shirt as it blends into the background a little bit too much. Just my $0.02..

A small backlight would've helped your subject stand out from the background. It would give him a small rim of light around the edges, which is ideal for lighting dark or night shots. If you watch any movie (good movie that is) that has a night scene, you'll see what I'm talking about.

I'd like to see the background darker...like completely black.

Looks like a scene from a Western! Good lighting. But I agree about a rim light would make him stand out from the background.
