Edit: Sorry for the picture without words. I has some issues, but below is the description of what my question is.

I am trying to downplay the bright surfaces of the snow on the ground. I am pretty sure there is a way to do this with gimp. Also any advance or good how to videos on how to deal with bright areas would be nice. Or any tips at all on how to edit this picture. Oh and I can't retake the shot, I just don't have that opportunity right now.

What do you mean 'downplay the snow'?

Make it brighter? Darker?

You sure downplayed the guys head!

The block of ice on the guy's head is distracting.

Darker. I was thinking outlining the bright areas and then lowering the brightness. I just don't know an esthetically pleasing way of doing it. This is what I did, I downplayed the blue on myself, and then highlighted the ground directly around me, then darkened it. But again, I am hoping that there is a better way of doing it.

If you're a student, Photoshop CS5 extended is only $39

There's a thread in here about it. I should chastise you for not searching *LOL*

Select the area you want to change, then adjust the curves.

Sorry, sale is over.. it's back to $200
