I am using a Nikon d5000 and a trial version of photomatix.

So ... could I get some feedback? I can see that it worked, but am not sure what I could do to make it look better.

Here's the original:

Here's the HDR version:

How many shots did you take 1 or 3?
for a subject composition to practice I wouldve chosen
something else perhaps a farmfield or old train yard and or junkyard
to a get a better idea for your first attempt

you know so that you can get a broader range when your working in photomatix
I hope made sense I am typing this comment from an iphone

That photo was auto bracketing with three images at a 1.7 value above and below the normal exposure. I had a 200 iso setting and in the A priority mode.I had the photomatix settings on default and just let it do all the work. As I said I was just seeing if I could even get it to work at all.

I just chose my house because I was home and reading a guide online about how to do it. My next attempt will be something better image wise.

You've done a pretty decent job here. The sky is actually a bit darker while at the same time the shadow areas have certainly lightened up. And thats what its all about. Nice to read you just used the default settings with Photomatix. Its a good place to start.

tweak the image using curves, it is a bit flat *(at least on my monitor)

just using photomatrix is only the starting point imho

Thanks. I have lots to learn but now think that I may go ahead and purchase the photmatix program if I can't find a free one that does close to the same.

I need to learn how to use curves. I honestly haven't gotten that far in my learning yet.

it all takes time, keep working and have fun

Rod:

Different programs will produce different results for HDR processing. You should try out our program, HDR Expose, in a free 30-day trial (with no watermarks).

Download HDR Expose

Let me know what you think.
