I everyone! I am new to this site and new to photography. I am looking to buy my first camera, that's not a point and shoot, and I'm clueless about what to buy. I worked for a photographer for a while and she used a Canon. I've heard that you are either a Canon person ora Nikon person. I'm not sure which brand to look at buying. What are the pros and cons of each? Before I left the photography job to go back to school, I had learned a bit about photoshop and she was teaching me how to white balance. I took a photography class in school, but that was many years ago and we were using film. So needless to say, I'm pretty new and I can use all the help and advice I can get. Photography has always been something I that I REALLY wanted to get into, but never had the money to buy the equipment I needed. So, now I'm ready to buy and I haven't got a clue what I want or what will be best for a beginner. Thanks in advance for any advice.

welcome!
there is really not much difference on a entry level body between canon and nikon. I started off with a Canon Rebel XS (1000D) which was the most entry level camera on the market. i got some nice shots on it and upgraded to a 60D.

Welcome aboard.

When you see a nice house, do you ask whether the builder used Makita or Dewalt tools? Probably not.
Think of cameras the same way...they are just tools and the brand really doesn't matter that much.

Go to a good camera store and see/hold the different models in your price range. If one of them feels better in your hands, that may be a good enough reason to choose that one over another.

That being said, I would still recommend sticking to either Canon or Nikon.

Go try a Nikon and Canon side-by-side, similar priced models. Which one do you like the feel of more? Do you have any friends that have Nikon or Canon lenses? This can add some weight to one or the other.

I ONLY use Dewalt. Just sayin...:sexywink:

I'm new, joined today like you did.
I agree Canon or Nikon is the way to go.
I went with Canon when I bought my first DSLR Camera and I've been very happy with them.
But cost can be a big issue and it is wise to look for kits as they give you extra lens and accessories with the camera at a great price.
Both Nikon and Canon have great cameras at lower prices then DSLR's that are easier to use and still take great shots.
If can't advise you on Nikon but if you decide to go the Canon DSLR route then I can recommend the Canon EOS XSi (450D).
It is a great camera and as it has been out for a few years the price is fairly low $500-700 range.
The low cost makes it a good camera to learn on. It is 12 Megapixels while the newer ones range up to 18 megapixels.

You can get into photography with no money. Unsure whether it would be a culture shock to you or not, but if you locate and regulalrly visit thrift stores/charity shops, check the local paper ads for people selling things, you can build up a good selection of manual focus lenses. Same goes for film cameras. Don't be put off from using film. It's still very much alive and easily scannable.

If you are into photography, i'd say skip the digital point and shoot stage..get a film SLR or get an old DSLR. Ideally Canon or Nikon DSLR but otherwise film SLR can also be any that uses M42 mount lenses which are very common in second hand shopsand cheap on ebay.
