Video Camera

Hey,
I'm hoping someone here might know something about video cameras. I have no idea about them. I have been wanting to get one to try and expand my knowledge base to video and video editing along with photography. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Price wise I'm looking at most around $500 but could go over if say a $700 camera was much better than the $500. I will mostly be using it for sports. As far as what type I am clueless (DVD, HDD, ect...) I just want to be able to get the video onto my computer which I'm sure all do now adays anyways.
