Microsoft is looking to supplant the ubiquitous JPEG with an image format of its own--and it's hoping the debut of Windows Vista will help do the job. In 2006, Microsoft began promoting its own image standard, formerly called Windows Media Photo but renamed HD Photo in November. The company makes no bones about its ambitions: "Our ultimate goal is that it does become the de facto standard people are using for digital photos," said Josh Weisberg, Microsoft's director of digital imaging evangelism. .........continued

nice find, interesting. enticing?

" If it ain't broke, don't fix it " Gates and company just have to keep screwing with the public to get more money. Soon they will offer their "vista" and suddenly, none of the software that has been proven reliable forever, will no longer work, unless of course you get the latest, greatest version for a nominal fee.

The article failed to explain the benefits of the format.

The main benefits will be to Microsoft and Microsoft shareholders, if it catches on. :) Other than that the main benefits seem to be that it allows for more compression options than standard jpeg. Microsoft says it has "perceptible image quality comparable to JPEG 2000". I guess that means it's almost as good as jpeg 2000, but not quite. As I understand it, the main advantage of jpeg 2000 was that it looked better than jpeg (less jagged edges and artifacts) when compressed into tiny, tiny files. This sounds good for web designers, or other people displaying tiny, tiny image files. Not much benefit for what I do.

The article failed to explain the benefits of the format. It left me cold.
well for me, I'm a windows guy. I will be using vista shortly and will also have PS3 when it comes out. I think its worth a look.

after my TIFF discussions, I see no reason to stay with them. this could be a fresh start.
