The Tokina 80-400mm F/4.5-5.6. I have used this lens a couple of times and was amazed at it's performance. If used with a tripod, VR isn't an issue.

If you plan on shooting sports, or anything in motion for that matter, don't get this lens. The autofocus is dreadfully slow. I was in this same situation a while ago, so I saved up get the 70-200mm F/2.8 VR, and now I just ordered the 2x teleconverter.
