Wanting to take macro shots

Hey guys,

I was thinking of purchasing a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 (or at least I think that's what it is). However, I want to do some macro shots as well. How would the quality of the pictures be if I cheaped-out and got an extension for that lens? The (closely) similar lens, except with the macro feature is about $250...

The 50mm F1.8 with extension tubes would be a very good combination for macro. Extension tubes don't add any glass, so they don't really affect image quality they way a teleconvertor does.
