I agree with Mike on the lens suggestion. The Tamron 17-50 2.8 is my main lens when shooting family shoots as well as when i get the chance to second shoot weddings.
Very sharp, decent price, and well built. Never had an issue with it.
As for the 24-70 2.8, unless you're shooting a FF body, it's not gonna be anywhere near wide enough for a lot of the standard shots. Stick with the 17-50 and you'll be happier in the long run.
