week 1 with a DSLR

I just bought a Nikon D3000 and a 55-200mm telephoto lens and i have started to figure out how to use it! My family and I went on a trip to rocky mountain national park in Colorado and i snapped TONS of pics. C and C please

For a first go with a new camera, I think you did good. One general comment for you, keep the rule of thirds in mind when taking your shots. I'm bad a remember to do it also. Your second last shot it nicely done with the thirds rule, the rest are mostly just centered.

Thanks for the responses! I agree, I should have paid more attention to the rule of thirds, especially in numbers 1 and 5.

When shooting landscapes like numbers 2 and 3 is the rule of thirds very applicable? In number 2 especially I don't understand how i could have used it.

Typically with landscapes, you try to use the ROT by giving more sky or land, depending on what you want to see more off. Second one could have had more of the foreground cut out, and given more sky. The other one may have been trickier with the land being slopped the way it was. Remember, rules were meant to be broken.

I like #1 for the cuteness factor, but #4 is my fav'. Sort of Ansel Adamsish. Nice shots.

I personally like the 2nd and the 4th shots the most myself! Also it makes me want the 55-250mm telephoto lens for my Canon! I see lots of wildlife here in Michigan but can't get close enough to capture them in any detail w/ the 18-55mm kit lens.

Keep up the nice shooting! What mode(s) were you shooting in to take these?

For most i was shooting in apature priority mode, but I remember that some of the animal shots were done in auto because i didnt want to waste time fooling around with settings when they might run away at any moment.
