What are these gray areas?

I'm brand new to HDR photography. I use Photomatix Pro. I do not have Photoshop.
I have been noticing that in some of my pictures, when the sun is too close to my subject, the HDR version of the photo has gray areas in the sky. Anyone know how to fix this?

That area is most likely totally blown out in all the exposures. The software finds nothing but 255:255:255 in all the frames.

Try dragging the Smooth Highlights slider to the right. Reducing the TM Strength slider may also help.

Or I'm guessing I could also make sure the sun isn't near my shots!
