What is aperture?

I have a simple question, what is aperture? This may seem like a dumb question but I'm just starting out and haven't a clue...

Aperture is lating for "opening." It's a device in the lens that opens or closes in order to let the proper amount of light into the camera. It also controls depth of field as a result.
