What lense for d3100?

Hello all,
I know very little about photography but wanted to buy my dad a new lense for Christmas so wondered if I could have your help. He has a Nikon d3100 with 2 lenses: Tamron 70-300 and Nikon 18-55. He uses the camera for pictures of the family indoors and out, and goes out taking pictures of wildlife also. He is new to photography (2 years as a hobby). What I would like to know is what is the best lense to get which will compliment the lenses he already has? Any help would be much appreciated.

Nikon 35mm f1.8 AF-S G prime for around $199. Note that this lens will not zoom but will take much sharper photos than what he currently has. This lens is perfectly suited to take portraits.
