What to get next?

Right now I have the kit lens and I also have a 55-200MM lens but I'm looking at getting another. I had a few people recommend a 50 or 35, but what would you recommend for pet photography? Or for portraits? I've done a lot of research, but I'd like to hear feedback from people who use different lenses and love them (or hate them!). I have a D90.

Probably around $4-500. I don't know how much my husband wants to spend on my birthday, so I think that would be a fair range.
