What to look for in a monitor?

I know crt's are supposed to be better but I really just don't have the space for one. My old dual monitor just died on me and I'm looking to get an lcd.

If anyone has anything to look for when buying one that would be greatly appreciated, I've never shopped for one before so I;m not sure what to look for. Any brands that stand out? Or stray away from?

I'd like to try and not spend more than $150 if possible, at least 17inch would be nice.

"CRT's better than flat panels" That used to be the case but I think technology has progressed far enough that that is no longer the case.

I personally like offerings from Samsung.... but for $150 your choices are going to be limited.
