I realize 'best' is a subjective thing, but what are some of the better Macro lenses that will fit a D300?

There are a wide variety out there, but I think your best bet for GP macro (Nikon calls them "micro") would be the 105mm f/2.8 (not the VR version, but the older one).
the new 60mm is amazingly sharp, and it focuses extremely close.
Agreed, but if you read my earlier post, this can be it's own hindrance. In order to get 1:1 macro, you have to get so close that you are scaring off what you are trying to photograph in the first place.
If I were a Nikon guy I would buy the Nikon 105, but you could also consider the Sigma 105. I've seen great images from both.
Trenton - That working distance is from the front of the lens. 16" is a lot IMO. My Canon 100mm is 6 inches for minimum focus distance and it works very well.
