When put borders on images?

I see that some people here put borders on their pics. Even if it's just a white line around the frame, I think the picture is better presented with such borders (if done correctly!).

So, should I put borders on them for online viewing? Perhaps a really stupid question

I think the simple answer is, "It depends". Like vignettes, borders soemtimes add to the image, and sometimes not. Add a border to the image and see what you think; post for comments. If you don't like, delete it.
