Hi. I'm a newbie here. I have a question on depth of field. Even when using smaller apertures (for instance f11) I can't seem to get things in two different planes to all be in focus. Should I be using even smaller aperture? Or is this because I'm focusing at the wrong distance??

Thanks in advance!

While your DOF is mostly controlled with the lens aperture...focal length, distance to (and between) subjects and focus distance all play a part as well.

Also, note that your DOF extends 2/3 past your focus point and 1/3 back toward the camera.

If you can stop your lens down farther, say to F22 or F29....that will give you more DOF. If that doesn't quite do it, back up so that you aren't so close to the first subject.

Read more about Depth of Field (DoF). Play with this DoF calculator (choose your camera, change the settings and see how the DoF changes).

That DOF calculator is AWESOME!!!! I have internet on my smartphone so now I can more accurately plan my shooting location. Wow. Thanks.
