where to take pictures of Manhattan from a higher perspective

I'd like to take a picture of Manhattan at dusk from a higher location. The thing is that I don't want to go on the Empire State Building or on the Rockfeller Center. I'm looking for a location not as high, as most importantly, where I can set up my tripod and not have 1000 tourists around me. The ideal would be someone's balcuny or rooftop to give you an idea of what I am looking for.

Does anyone know any locations that are open to the public and that meet my requirements?

The top decks of parking garages can work really well for that sort of thing.

Of course, it depends on location in relation to the cityscape itself. Google Earth can help you plan for that.

I didn't know there was ANYWHERE in Manhattan that you could go and not have 1,000 tourists around you.
