Which tripod do you recommend?

I am planning on buying a tripod and would like to know what should I look for I a good tripod. There are so many out there, and would like to know which are the most recommended. I don’t have a huge budget, so please don’t post $1,000 tripods. Thanks.

Okay, we know your budget is under $1,000--but it would be even more helpful if we knew how much under. Can you spend $500? $300? $59.99? (if it's the last, don't bother. Just stick it in savings and keep working at it until you have enough for a reasonable tripod).

What do you need a tripod FOR? Will you just be using it in a studio for portraiture? Or will you be taking on locations with you? Or carrying it on a backpack to do hiking etc.

How you plan to use the tripod and how much you can spend are critical bits of information to have before anyone can give you advice.
