While out birding yesterday, I got a shot of an altogether different sort of bird, out exercising it's wings. The Canadian built Avro Lancaster bomber ("dam buster") was one of several hundred used by Canadian and British pilots during WW2. After the war, most were lost, and this one (based at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum) is one of only TWO still in flying service in the world. The second is in Britain.
On nice days, the boys at the Museum take her out to keep her in shape, but keeping her flying is almost a full-time job of parts replacement and refurbishment. It's an amazing plane, and when you hear that lumbering growl you can't help but look up and watch her fly over. They will actually be flying her across the Atlantic in August for a month-long tour of the UK and meet-up with the other flying Lanc, which would be phenomenal to see.
