Back ground too busy...

I was trying to get a couple of cute pics of my daughter before we headed to grad... and am trying to get more use out of my 10-24.

Used on camera flash as a fill, sky was very gray and overcast!

not sure if attempting portraits with it is a good idea?
Thoughts?

Short focal lengths give unflattering distortion, as present here. Other one is you can't create the shallow DoF to throw the background out of focus and keep emphasis on your subject.

I would only use shorter focal lengths for environmental portraits where the subject isn't filling the frame. Each to there own though.

Other than mentioned above I think the subject is captured well and focus on her eyes is excellent. I like this portrait.

here is one more from a more traditional perspective... poor kid was sure that I was going to fall off the lawn furniture!

Lovely shots, Ali. Generally the best focal length for portrait is between 80-135mm. :)
