WILL I LIVE LONG ENOUGH and help with B&W Scanning

ICE does not work with my B&W Negs

That's what I was saying (it isn't that they are B&W, it's that they are silver-image films. B&W dye-image film is OK with ICE). If you do inadvertently have ICE switched on for a silver-image film (the software will not stop you) it will give exactly the results you are describing. Otherwise check the end points in comparison to the histogram in the levels control. Don't use auto levels. Nikonscan can pull everything off the neg.

You could always scan to an .NEF file for later processing (except for ICE etc) - this will allow you to manipulate the data later without having to rescan.

If you switch to an Epson you will take a hit in terms of true resolution. The Coolscan has a true resolution of about 3900 dpi when set to 4000 spi. This is better than ant Epson.

Good luck,
Helen

ok going to try one now

scan to a .NEF do you mean just save as a .NEF i am saving as .TIF

I am a Photoshop numpty in fact i hate doing any (much) post jiggery pockery of course doing my own B&W processing it was very very easy to do enlarger jiggery pockery

Also I think the V700 scans 24 35mm negs at one time and the V600 only scans 12 35mm negs
That is the difference. The film scanner of the V700 is twice the size of the one on the V600.

About the ICE - I didn't even think of that... My scanner does have it, but I never use it so I guess I just forgot it was even there - lol.

i posted one before and after switching off Digital ICE

now all i have to do is learn PS or GIMP at how to remove dust marks............though what i have a digital record is exactly what i wanted - and its fun to look back all those years too - time to roll up my sleeves and get back to the colour negs now (with your help) i have that wee problem cracked

David,
I also have a Nikon Coolscan V ED and anticipate a day when I may have to retire my WinXP OS and move forward probably to Win 7. Could you share what you did with the scanner info file to get things working?

Thanks.......
