So the question I am purposing is would you buy these used lenses at these prices. (Please remember that these prices are in Canadian funds)

Nikon 70-200 VR1 - $1250
Nikon 24-70 - $1275

Now bear in mind that the VR2 is selling for $2099 + Tax (13%) brand new and a 24-70 is going for $1617 + Tax.

Both of the used lenses are around 3 years old. I am adding these to my D3100 (which I plan to upgrade next).

Thoughts?

I figure a 1/3 reduction off retail is reasonable for high-end glass in good condition. I've seen both of these go for less, but not a lot less.

Thanks for the reply. So I assume that the 24-70 would be the better bet in terms is price point?

If the 70-200 f/2.8 is in good shape that's a great deal.. If you shoot DX you won't see much difference between it and the VR2.

Offer $1100 ($1150 when pushed) cash for the 24-70 or $1150 (pushed to $1200) for the 70-200 , you might get lucky. A killer deal would be $2100 cash for both.

Well I went and found a 70-200 VR2 and got that lens tonight. Sweet price of $1775 for a 9month old lens. Saved myself 525 in the end from buying it from retail store. Now back to the piggy bank i go to get the 24-70 next. Thanks for the commets and suggestions.

As others said, seems fine... however, I think I might look at what a used 70-200 VR2 is going for. I'm sure it will be more, but the difference in quality between the two lenses is STAGGERING and would be well worth $500 or so extra bucks, IMO. (assuming you could handle it in your budget, of course)

If you have the funds, and you see a great deal on high end glass, go for it.

Odds are the same deal won't come around twice, as high end glass doesn't lose value. And in some cases, if the lens is discontinued, it'll be more used than new!
