I'm going to pickup a Canon XTi. I'm deciding on if I should get the 18-55 stock kit, or if I should get the body only, and get a Tamron kit (Tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 and 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD). Budget wise it is about the same. The 18-55 kit will cost about 100 $ more, and the Tamron option will cost about 150 more. If the quality of the lenses are similar then I get an extra lens for 50 bucks. Good for a starter kit, and enough to hold me over for a while, till I know what I want/need.

On www.slrgear.com they give the Tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 a 5/10 for picture quality (even though I couldn't find a review for it). I assume that this is similar to the 18-55 Canon kit.

the Tamron 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD ranked 8/10

Looks like a good buy, just want to see what others think

it really depends on what you are going to be doing. No doubt about it, 2 lenses for 150 means poor quality. The added range however is pretty nice. The only thing I would consider is that the kit lens is pretty much the cheapest wide angle lens you can get, hands down.

go with the 18-55. It's wide, the 28-80 isn't.

Yeah, I was kinda of thinking of that. 28mm * 1.6 (for the XTi) = 44mm.
