The newer, more expensive ZF.2 version is not available in my country as of right now. The differences between ZF and ZF.2 lenses are listed on the Carl Zeiss website:

Welcome to Carl Zeiss Camera Lenses

But I'm not sure I understand. What exactly do you give up by going with the older ZF version if you only intend to use your camera in Manual mode?

My cameras: D700 & D2Xs.

Also, what focusing screen would you recommend?

Not much. EXIF data stored in the file and that's about it.

In Aperture/Shutter priority you wouldn't have to set the max aperture in the menu as the lens (ZF.2) can communicate with the camera. The ZF.2 would also be better for flash as distance data is transfered through the lens' CPU.

I hear the Katzeye is good. I got a cheap ebay one that works well save that it meters about a 1/3 stop low (exposure comp is a Good thing ;)) but the KatzEye is supposed to be brighter.

Thank you.

If it's better for flash, then the ZF.2 it is. That is... if I can find one. /
