Mantids are very cool. I like how you caught their ability to turn their head to look at things, as we would do.

<nitpick>Technically, they are not bugs (hemiptera) but are in the order mantodea</nitpick>

Really, it came down to the mantis, a stinkbug, and a japanese beetle. I realized I posted the beetle a while back already, so between the stinkbug and the mantis, the mantis just looked more interesting.
 
Fish (mudskipper, a missing link
He's just the latest fish to evolve walking and climbing (mudskippers can climb trees).

But mudskippers are Actinopterygians while the earliest walking fish were Sarcopterygians. (like lungfish and land animals)
