Too many judge animal shots on the merits of what animal is shot. They miss a ton of excellent opportunities by passing by what they consider mundane, or beneath their artistic consideration. These two shots are not being posted as artistic, or even overly competent, they are being posted because the composition made possible by their environment makes them worthy of getting the shot.
Notice on the first shot that there is a shaft of sunlight coming down from the upper right. First touching some dead needles, then lower the tip of another, then a larger circle of needles and finally landing on that white area of the cows forehead. You are not concsious of it but that light strongly leads your eye.
