    bird is nice and sharp and I like the colour and clarity of the eyes.

    I dont like the background much though. Is that a glass panel behind the bird? Looks like raindrops on glass and very distracting from the image.

    Actually it is a concrete retaining wall next to the waters edge. Sunset and the shadows from the plants made for an interesting background.

    I like the side view of the heron on the first shot, but the detail in the feathers (and the nice warm light from the sun) is better in the second.

    Looks like you got pretty close. There's one that hangs out near where I live, and one guy actually hand feeds it shaved ham. Otherwise, it's fairly skittish around humans.
