These don't exact remind me of vacant homes, look like they were getting ready for a hurricane to me.lol. I never been to the area so I don't have the exact connection to it like you do. Maybe if the paper sign is a bit more in focus??? I don't know.
 
think you're right. it's not telling the story I want to.

Whoa, that second shot is sure a study in contrasts (well kept vs. rundown). And the sight of all that peeling paint really helps convey that. The first shot doesn't work for me, as it's too 'straight on' and there isn't enough of that decrepit feel to it. Just my 2 cents worth
 
#2 is a winner for sure.

I do like the texture, patterns and contrast of the moisture line shown in #1 of the boarded up door.
 
thanks antarctican and kundalini. It's good to see that they are not both complete rubbish, but I did try to get a more 'stay-out' and 'no-longer-a-place-for-people' feeling and that didn't work. Yes, it's too straight on, the first one.
