I'm pretty new to photography so be gentle. lol
Welcome and good attempt. There are a couple of issues that strike me about this particular image. The first is that it's very mid-tone rich, that is: has a lot of grey. An ideal black and white image does have a rich mid-tone area, but should also cover the gamut from pure black to pure white. The concern is the focus/composition/ You have a large unfocused area in the foreground, in particular, the leaf which is 'end on' right centre of image really blocks the eye. I would try a reshoot a little more to camera left to eliminate that one leaf, with perhaps a touch more DoF and in the conversion, try and increase the contrast somewhat.
Just my $00.02 worth - your milage may vary.
