My beagles loved to eat them, but only if they were alive and active. If a touch of the paw brought little or now response, they would ignore them. Whirring wings were a sign of an irresistable treat.

Found one lying on it's back on my deck, went to pick it up and it started screeching and flapping it's wings. Scared the living hell out of me. I was going to stomp it, but it flew away.

We were supposed to have been inundated by them, the last time Brood X emerged (2004) like we were in 1987. Well, it didn't happen, at least not around here. There was a lot of homes and roads put in over those years and when they scraped away the dirt, they removed a lot of the eggs.

I guess we're getting some of the early birds (or early bugs) from Brood V, due next year.
