Lens Advice

I'm saving up for a Rebel XSi, and was thinking of purchasing a Canon EF-S 17-85 instead of getting a kit lens.

Any thoughts on this lens? I figure it'll feel familiar switching from my 35mm with a 28-55. Unfortunately I don't know much to look for in glass besides that you need to spend some cash here to make it worth your while.

I'll let others who know rule on that lens, but I really like my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as a walkabout lens. The disadvantage is that it's not USM, but it's a great optic and quite fast.
