Luc Tuymans Convicted of Plagiarism for Painting Photo of Politician

interesting. Seems a some painters will often draw off various photographs for inspiration i wonder if this is a precedent setter.
I draw, paint and shoot. In art classes, photos are often used as reference, especially for illustrators. A common name for that reference: a "swipe." You are also taught that you can't use images without permission in the real world. Of course, I've seen many obvious copyright infringing drawings, especially on art boards and facebook. Particularly in drawings of celebrities, which is often as close a copy as the artist can manage. No originality whatsoever.
