i am still using a Nikon SB-24 speedlight and a Nikon F4.

the SB-24 manual refers to "angle of coverage":

In auto mode, the zoom head automatically adjusts to
provide an angle of coverage that matches the focal
length of the lens in use (indicated in the LCD panel)

It is also possible to select your desired angle of coverage
manually, by pressing the zoom button [ZOOM]. In the LCD
panel, "M" appears above "ZOOM" indicator.

can someone translate this into english?

what i need to accomplish is indoor low-light photography at a distance of 0.5 -1.5 feet using a fixed 50mm lens.

If you're using a 50mm prime ('D' or newer), the flash should show "50mm" on the rear LCD indicating that it has adjusted the flash output to the optimum angle for that lens. If it's not showing that, then use the rear buttons to adjust the angle of coverage until it does display 50mm.

John, i need your answer explained:

where on the lens is its identification as "prime" -- i see nothing immediate that resembles a 'D';

what is the 'angle of coverage';

use, specifically, which SB-24 buttons to to force the display of '50mm'?
