Another way of looking at it.

Imagine what happens when the iris is stopped down to a pinhole. Which rays define the location of the (undiffracted) image - the tiny bundle passing through the pinhole, or rays that head towards the front nodal point but then hit the almost-closed iris blades?

Okay... between this and some additional research, I understand (in general terms) what's going on. I think for practical purposes, we can say that a point about half-way down the lens barrel will suffice for most panoramic work.

WOW!!! Thanks for all of the responses. That is some heavy duty tripod equip you have there Ron. All of the ideas you mentioned make sense, I am about to stitch my pics from today. Tomorrow I will definitely focus more on following your directions.
