Scanning & Cataloging in iPhoto

I'm in the process of scanning all my neg's and slides. I want to take them into iPhoto just as a cataloging area so my family can look thru them in a basic slide show and choose some they may want to print or email I will have a number or somethin on each to direct them to another DVD with the larger tiff files. Any ideas on how to catalog them and will iPhoto allow me to have a controller with a forward and reverse and pause button? I'm at 2271 images and about half thru.
