There is a stark beauty about the Essex Marshlands. If you could strip back the modern sea defences, the landscape must still look the same as when the Vikings last raided here in 991AD under Olaf Tryggvason and the Danish King, Svein Forkbeard. It was not very far from here that The Battle of Maldon took place downriver from Tollesbury where the East Saxons ( where our county of Essex gets it's name from ) under Ealdorman Byrhtnoth defeated the last Viking raid on English soil.
