Umbrella vs. softbox

I've asked many friends involved in photography their preference in lighting equipment and I keep hearing mixed reviews on the benefits of umbrellas and softboxes. I do portrait photographs for engagements. So...umbrella or softbox?

AND... if anyone could recommend the best place to order backdrops I would appreciate it!

Both, plus several other kinds of light modifiers, like diffusion panels, beauty dishes.

What kind of backdrops? Muslin? Canvas? Vinyl? Paper?
