Would it NOT have worked without the application of the on-camera flash (assuming you used that, given the straight, harsh shadows of the leaves on leaf).
That is a female Cardinal.
The backround colors work very well with the Cardinal.
I hate twigs too.
I don't find the Lilac bush branch much of a distraction, this is a wild bird. great shot. I just would have cropped alittle more off of the tail side of the picture.
It was late evening so the flash, or 1/30th sec was my choice. With the 600mm I went with the flash....Mike
