Nice finds. If you hang around the Coots long enough, they will come close; and they are plentiful. It's pretty much hit and miss with the Mergansers, but they are a beautiful bird to photograph.
BTW, so are the Coots. I think they are underrated because they are so common. Get a good zoomed in closeup of their feet when you get a chance.

nice shots. they turned out good..

i see coots occasionally, once i has a juvenile coot come close enough to photograph, it was pretty small, i saw some yesterday but they stayed on the other side of the lake near the shore. i don't see them so often around here.
