Not too bad. As far as reading, I would suggest any one of the many books written by fellow Brit John Hedgecoe. He wrote a LOT of instructional books, all illustrated with hundreds of images, each with accompanying explanations on theory, technique, and design and composition principles and techniques. His books SHOW and TELL the reader exactly how the visual language works, and how to approach all types of situations: back lighting, side lighting, overhead lighting, late afternoon light, early AM light, sunrises, sunsets, foggy days, rainy days, snow, night time, flash lighting, and so on.
The best part is that his books are pre-digital,and so they are based on the principles of ***photography***, and not based on taking a turd and trying to polish it into a gem by using post production aka digital photography. Hedgecoe's books are very plentiful; any used book shop ought to have a least three to five titles in stock for just a few pounds.
