All 3 shots are very nice, particularly the chipmunk and the meadowlark since I don't see those around these parts.

The 400 really seems to be a popular lens especially for getting BIF. I chose the 300 because I thought the better minimum focusing distance would suit me better. Although I have never used the 400, there were times I wished I would have gotten it.

I borrow the 300 f4 from CPS for a week recently. It is also a nice lens. Have you considered renting a 300 f4 and the 1.4x? Personally, I'd be worried about having a max aperture of 5.6, and putting the 1.4x on the 300 f4 would give you roughly a 420 f5.6.

I've considered both and like I said I planned on renting the 300 before I make my final decision.

I have to say I love #3 the most.. It looks the sharpest to me, and would have been perfect if the face was facing the sun.. Nice shots all of them. :)

All nice, LOVE the meadowlark.

Just don't do what I did. I bought a 2 x extender specifically for my 55-250 kit lens. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit. It fits my 100mm macro, and my 50mm prime just fine, but not my kit lenses. Now I have to wait until I can afford a 200, 300 or 400mm lens that will work with my 2x.
So, worthwhile to check compatibility first.

Yes, this is my only gripe with this one but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to take advantage of this pose.

I have the 1.4x tc version III and I rarely use it. Tried it a few times with the 300f4 and meh...not impressed (unless you are already close to the subject and want a shot without cropping at all). Otherwise I'd rather crop without the tc.

The tc will come in handy one day when I can afford the 300 2.8. Ah heavenly :)

It is a popular lens a a good one at that. Nice shots and that last one is a beauty, well taken. Those Chipmunks are so darn cute, small and gorgeous. Would love to have those here.

All the best and nice shots from that lens, its a good one.

Danny.
