8 and 10 stop filters

I purchased a Hitech 8 stop ND filter and it seems to cast a bluish haze over the photo and mutes the colors.

Here's an example of an unedited raw converted to jpeg:

Do all 8 or 10 stop filters do this or can someone recommend a filter that doesn't require a lot of pp? I have ps cs5 and it still produced a decent final result but I'd like to get it right in camera.

I've only used my 10-stop once but didn't notice much, if any color cast but I have heard some users mention it. I have this one B+W 77mm 3.0 ND MRC 110M Filter 66-1066186 B&H Photo Video it's pricey as heck but you know that old addage....

I use the same filter as Trever, and it can be slightly magenta, but really just barely. I always shoot RAW, so a couple clicks on the tint clears it right up. The filter you're using seems to have reduced your contrast quite a bit, which is likely due to inferior coatings flaring.

Your optical path is just like any other piece of engineering, only as reliable as the weakest link... So, best to get a filter manufactured to at least the same standard as the lens you're mounting it on.

(Also, I noticed you shot this at f/22.. stopping the lens down this far will produce diffraction. This is what's responsible for the overall softness of the photo)

Not all filters, ND or otherwise, are created equal.

I've never been impressed with the quality or consistancy of Hitech filters. They are inexpensive for a reason. They are resin (plastic), not glass.

I stuck pretty much to B+W and LEE for filters and expected to pay $100+ for any type of filter. B+W 65-073102 77mm Neutral Density 0.9-8x Filter #103

Thanks, I purchased it from b & h for $140, it's a 4x4 for my holder. I guess I may have to look into a lee or b + W

mine doesn't do this at all, its an almost impossible to notice purplish tinge but its slightly there. that may be due to the camera not being able to tell WB with such a filter. But mine is a 77mm B+W filter, not a square filter.
