I think it might look a little better if it was a bit brighter. IMHO.

Got a CRT? Maybe you can hook that up to your laptop just to get a preview...
I'm not to keen on monitor calibration though... If your laptop has a good video card, i.e. ATI or NVIDIA, they have advanced menus where you can adjust brightness, gamma and color corrections.
Hopefully that helps...
